The Young Elites by Marie Lu 5/5 stars

Hey, guys!  So, I've been a big fan of the author of this book, Marie Lu, after reading her first series, Legend (which you should check out if you haven't already).  I was excited about reading The Young Elites, but ended up waiting a long time before I could get my hands on it.  Then, of course, I fell in love with the book and read it in a single day!

The Cover:
The Cover:
It shows a darkening sky with the title in front.  The sword in place of a "t" sets the stage for the medieval sort of warfare ever present in this book.  It's simple, but I like its simplicity.  A cover.

Official Description:
I am tired of being used, hurt, and cast aside.
Adelina Amouteru is a survivor of the blood fever. A decade ago, the deadly illness swept through her nation. Most of the infected perished, while many of the children who survived were left with strange markings. Adelina’s black hair turned silver, her lashes went pale, and now she has only a jagged scar where her left eye once was. Her cruel father believes she is a malfetto, an abomination, ruining their family’s good name and standing in the way of their fortune. But some of the fever’s survivors are rumored to possess more than just scars—they are believed to have mysterious and powerful gifts, and though their identities remain secret, they have come to be called the Young Elites.
Teren Santoro works for the king. As Leader of the Inquisition Axis, it is his job to seek out the Young Elites, to destroy them before they destroy the nation. He believes the Young Elites to be dangerous and vengeful, but it’s Teren who may possess the darkest secret of all.
Enzo Valenciano is a member of the Dagger Society. This secret sect of Young Elites seeks out others like them before the Inquisition Axis can. But when the Daggers find Adelina, they discover someone with powers like they’ve never seen.
Adelina wants to believe Enzo is on her side, and that Teren is the true enemy. But the lives of these three will collide in unexpected ways, as each fights a very different and personal battle. But of one thing they are all certain: Adelina has abilities that shouldn’t belong in this world. A vengeful blackness in her heart. And a desire to destroy all who dare to cross her.
It is my turn to use. My turn to hurt.

My Review:
I loved this book!  It was exciting and a really quick, enjoyable read.  Just as a warning to all of you Legend fans: this series is quite a bit darker.  It's not overly dark, but its main character is more a villain than a hero.  Also, before I started reading, I couldn't tell if it alternated point of views or not.  If you were also wondering, it is in first person from Adelina's point of view with maybe five chapters in third person about other characters for some background info.
The plot moved very quickly and had plenty of twists and turns.  It was exciting and keep me hooked.
The characters were also complex.  I loved Enzo, and Adelina was definitely a different sort of character.  They were unique, and I loved getting to know them throughout the course of the book.
While I loved and would definitely recommend The Young Elites, I am worried that the second book, The Rose Society will not be as good because of the direction I think the series is about to take.  I look forward to reading it, though!

An alignment with fear, anger, and passion.

Happy Reading!
